Held in French, this Café Scientifique provides an opportunity to meet scientists from all horizons and discuss their work. No scientific background is necessary. Just bring your curiosity!

Depuis le début de l’exploration spatiale et de sa commercialisation, tous les satellites et sondes envoyés dans l’espace ont été construits sur Terre et lancés dans l’espace avec des fusées. Pour les plus grandes structures, l’assemblage et le déploiement ont été utilisés pour essayer de dépasser les limites de masse et volume des lanceurs. Durant notre discussion, je décrirai les avantages et contraintes de la fabrication dans l’espace puis je prendrai l’exemple de l’impression 3d plastique appliqué au spatial. Puis, j’illustrerai l’utilisation de ce processus avec le concept SOLSPACE, une constellation de miroirs de 1 km de diamètre, qui permettra de combler certaines demandes d’énergies vertes.

Après un diplôme d’ingénieur en France et un master recherche au VKI en Belgique, Gilles Bailet (Université de Glasgow) a effectué une thèse en systèmes spatiaux à l’École Centrale Paris. Au cours de sa thèse, il a contribué au design et à la fabrication d’un CubeSat (satellite de 5kg) pour l’étude de la rentrée atmosphérique. Il a ensuite co-fondé et était le responsable technique du centre spatial de CentraleSupélec. En Décembre 2019, il rejoint l’Université de Glasgow comme responsable du thème « Macro-Space » pour la Chaire de l’Académie Royale d’Ingénierie du Professeur Colin McInnes. Depuis son arrivée à l’Université de Glasgow et avec ses nouvelles responsabilités, il travaille sur la fabrication dans l’espace de structures géantes et multifonctionnelles et collabore sur divers projets d’ingénierie spatiale.
