Ever since the Hunterian Art Gallery opened its doors in 1980, Joan Eardley’s works have been favourites among members of the University community and visitors alike. Her ability to capture the elemental energy of her subjects gives her work a timeless quality that resonates with today’s viewers as much as it did with her contemporaries.

This exhibition celebrates Joan Eardley (1921–1963), one of Scotland’s most remarkable artists working in the post-war period, in the centenary year of her birth. In two instalments, the first focuses on works on paper and the second highlights paintings.

The first installment features thirteen works from The Hunterian collection at the University of Glasgow including works on paper such as Pat Samson of c.1962 and two of The Hunterian's most popular paintings, Salmon Nets and the Sea of 1960 and Sweet Shop, Rotten Row of 1960–61.

As part of the centenary celebrations around Eardley’s birth, Technical Art History postgraduate students from the University of Glasgow are focusing on Salmon Nets and the Sea and Sweet Shop, Rotten Row. In parallel, complementary research funded by the Johnstone Sisters Endowment Fund and the Association for Art History is ongoing. The result of these investigations will be highlighted in the second instalment of Celebrating Joan Eardley that will take place this autumn.

Celebrating Joan Eardley (1921–1963) is part of the programme of events organised by the Scottish Women and the Arts Research Network (SWARN).
