It only took two singles for Black Country, New Road to become one of the most exciting new bands around, with 2019's Athens, France and Sunglasses generating the kind of buzz that has kept the music press talking ever since. The group’s seven members embrace an experimental approach to their sound, combining abrasive post-punk, klezmer brass and freestyle jazz riffs.
Made up of frontman Isaac Wood, Lewis Evans on saxophone, May Kershaw on keyboards, Charlie Wayne on drums, Luke Mark on guitar, Tyler Hyde on bass and Georgia Ellery violin, the septet choose their name to symbolise finding a good path from a bad place. They got their start playing DIY shows at The Windmill in Brixton, originally playing under the name Nervous Conditions, and the energy generated at those early live performances quickly earned them a reputation as one of the most promising new bands on the scene.
Black Country, New Road soon landed a BBC 6 Music Session, sold out a series of shows across the UK and packed fields at Primavera and Glastonbury. By the end of 2019, The Quietus was already ready to declare them “the best band in the world” and deep-cut editorials in The New York Times, The Guardian and Loud & Quiet were all helping to raise their profile – comparing them to everyone from Slint and The Fall to Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens.
In early 2020, the band began to record their first album with producer with Andy Savours (The Killers, Sigur Ros) and further honed their sound into a uniquely cinematic mix of punk poetry, freestyle jazz, strings and math rock.
In late October 2020, Black Country, New Road released the single Science Fair, featuring textured layers of guitars going head to head with viola and sax loops, along with a video directed by Bart Price. The debut EP, For The First Time, arrived on 5 February 2021 to universal acclaim – with Clash naming it "a significant milestone in modern guitar music" before it was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
