The term intaglio, derived from the Italian intagliare, simply means to ‘engrave or cut’ into the surface of a smooth hard material such as metal, stone or even plastic.
In the first session we will initially explore mark making through monoprinting, working loosely to develop confidence with line and shape in printing. This will start to expand your drawing vocabulary, which will then inform the subsequent activities over the following weeks.
During the second week you will try out Drypoint Etching, a meditative process that produces beautiful velvety prints through the use of engraved lines. We will look at different approaches to mark making and engraving, experimenting with a variety of outcomes. Participants will learn how to use traditional etching tools to create a range of tones, shapes and textures, as well as incorporating more expressionistic marks with sandpaper and masking tape.
More approaches will be gradually added to your portfolio over the subsequent weeks, including using multiple and shaped plates, chine colle, and then culminating with collagraph. Building collagraph plates is a fun process that also falls within the umbrella of intaglio, but incorporates a wide range of textures through a playful additive approach.
This course is great for beginners but will also cover some valuable tips and tricks for the more experienced printmaker.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
