Zenith's Pessoa: an Experimental Life, a finalist of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Biography, has been called "one of the great literary biographies of the century" by Simon Winchester (in The New Statesman).
In conversation with Luís Gomes, Lecturer of Portuguese at the University of Glasgow, Zenith will discuss Pessoa's experiments in literature, politics, sexuality, and spirituality. He will talk as well about his method for drawing a portrait of the shy office worker lurking behind the many personae he called heteronyms.
We’ll also be asking what led Fernando Pessoa, in 1914 Lisbon, to create a direct connection with Glasgow through Álvaro de Campos, Pessoa's most outrageous modernist heteronym par excellence, to whom Pessoa ascribed his formative years studying Engineering at Glasgow's Naval College.
