Maud Sulter: Memory & Identity Exhibition Talk with Prof. Susannah Thompson

About Maud Sulter: Memory & Identity Exhibition Talk with Prof. Susannah Thompson

Maud Sulter (1960-2008) was an award-winning artist of Scots-Ghanaian heritage, born in Glasgow. In this talk, Professor Susannah Thompson will discuss Sulter's career across visual art, poetry and writing, focussing on work on show in the current exhibition at Pollok House. She will consider the Scottish themes and ideas in Sulter's work, her interest in photography and collage, and the reasons for the recent resurgence of interest in her work amongst younger artists and writers.

The event will comprise an approx. 30-min talk followed by Q&A session and an opportunity to visit the exhibition for the final time before it finishes!

About the Speaker
Susannah Thompson is an art historian, writer and art critic based in Glasgow. Her research focusses on Twentieth century and contemporary art in Scotland, particularly the work of women artists, and on feminist approaches to art and visual culture. Recent projects include a series of essays and events related to the painter Joan Eardley, work on the sculptor Edmonia Lewis and writing on the work of artist and critic Cordelia Oliver. Susannah works at The Glasgow School of Art where she is Professor of Contemporary Art and Criticism and Head of Doctoral Studies.
