A new year is the perfect time to try a new activity by participating in one (or all!) of our free New Chapter Creative Writing Workshops between January- March.

Each of our six creative writing workshops in community libraries across the city will focus on a different theme and be delivered by a different writer.

Our fourth workshop focuses on Writing about Place and will be delivered by Alison Irvine at Pollokshaws Library. Is there a place that is special to you and brings back happy memories? Your granny’s living room? The shop on the corner where you got your paper and rolls? The children’s section of the library? The bus stop where you waited for the bus to the coast?

In this workshop, Alison will take you through a series of fun writing exercises to get you writing about your local area, your memories and what is special to you. We’ll look at how recording memories and stories, particularly about places or buildings in areas that are undergoing change, can create fascinating social history.

Alison Irvine is a writer of fiction and non-fiction. Her first novel, This Road is Red, was shortlisted for the Saltire First Book of the Year and her second novel, Cat Step, was a BBC Radio 4 Front Row Editor’s Pick. She is the writer in the artist collective Recollective and together they have documented a range of buildings and places including the Barrowland Ballroom, the Red Road Flats, Falkirk Town Centre and the East End of Glasgow, interviewing residents, and using photography, illustration and writing to record their stories.

Everyone welcome, whatever your writing experience.
