This two-day Summer school will give young artists a taster of a variety of different traditional arts and crafts from Mexico, allowing them to explore new creative skills whilst learning about another culture. Your artist tutor Greer Pester lived in Mexico from 2015 -2019 and her research and practice has been inspired by its rich array of creative practices and cultures.
The class will touch on number if different projects, allowing a rich and exciting introduction to different types of making.
In the first session, participants will be introduced to Mexican traditional crafts by making their own Huichol inspired yarn paintings and woven ‘ojos de dios’. In the afternoon, the class will start exploring the joys of edible art; painting and printing with the natural dye cochineal onto tortillas ceremoniales in the Otomi style.
On the second day, Greer will introduce artists to Dias de los Muertos by creating sugar skulls. The final afternoon will give participants the opportunity to create their own version of ‘Papel picado’, tissue paper window art, inspired by the masters in Oaxaca.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
