Saturday 14 October 2023 - Fraktur With A Flourish
Fraktur is an upright compressed style of lettering which has the characteristics of Gothic Textura and includes more curves which softens the letters and can appear more legible. After analysing various examples this workshop will introduce participants to basic strokes, and lowercase and uppercase letters. The principles of basic flourishes to embellish the alphabet will be identified and used via simple exercises and practice, adding grace to words and quotes.
Sunday 15 October 2023 - Bird & Floral Flourishes
Bird flourishing is a form of penmanship using the pointed pen. It can be used to decorate and embellish calligraphic styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian... or simply as a stand alone piece of art. After analysing historical samples this workshop will introduce participants to the techniques of Bird Flourishing with simple exercises and exemplars. The key to successful bird flourishing is a combination of graceful, smooth lines arranged in a harmonious relationship
together and produced with a contrast of light and heavy strokes. The smooth graceful lines can also be used for experimenting with flowers, patterns and borders.
Both workshops are suitable for novice and experienced calligraphers.
