Wikipedia & Knowledge Activism Workshop

About Wikipedia & Knowledge Activism Workshop

In this fun, friendly, and informative workshop you’ll learn to add, edit and improve Wikipedia entries for Scottish Suffrage/ttes. From Wiki newbies to experienced editors, all are welcome!

This event is HYBRID – you can attend in person or online. Training provided by Wikimedia UK. CATERING provided for those coming in person.

Did you know that Wikipedia doesn’t accurately reflect women’s histories? Wikipedia is the 7th most visited website in the world but currently only 1 in 5 of Wikipedia’s biographies are about women. Wiki also lacks diversity in both its editors and its articles. This workshop will help redress Wikipedia’s gender bias, both in the content available, and in the editors writing for the site.

Join us as we #MakeWikipediaBetter!

Hosted by Protests & Suffragettes, Women's History Scotland, and Wikimedia UK.

WHAT WILL WE DO IN THIS WORKSHOP?
We’ll be focusing on improving, expanding, and creating Wikipedia articles on Suffragists, Suffragettes, Suffrage organisations, and protests across Scotland.

The afternoon will include a short talk by the Scottish Oral History Center on their collection, and we will be adding references to sources from the SOHC archive. P&S will also be opening up their massive digital archive on Scotland’s Suffrage/ttes for all to use during the workshop.

––> It’s FREE
––> ALL WELCOME – No experience needed, as full training will be provided by Wikimedia UK
––> HYBRID – Join us in person or online.

Supporting a new EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE on SCOTLAND’S SUFFRAGE HISTORY
Protests and Suffragettes have developed an Educational Resource on ‘Scotland’s Suffrage History’ and a Suffragette Trumps card game which is now being taught in over 100 schools. We’ll be improving Wiki articles for activists who feature in this Educational Resource. The Wikipedia entries improved in this workshop will support young people across Scotland as they learn about the inspiring activists who fought for the right for women to vote in the UK.

YOUR HOSTS
This is Protests & Suffragettes 9th Wiki Workshop with Wikimedia UK, and our 4th partnering with Women's History Scotland. During previous events, Wikipedia articles relating to Glasgow’s Suffragettes, 1915 Rent Strike organisers, and other Scottish women activists were created and improved.

These workshops are part of Glasgow Herstory Workshops, led by Protests & Suffragettes and funded by Big Lottery and Wikimedia UK.
PLEASE NOTE: each workshop is 'standalone' – you do not need to attend the series.

BEFORE THE EVENT / WHAT TO BRING
PLEASE DO create a Wikipedia account in advance of the day (see LINKS below for more HOW TO WIKI). Please also bring a laptop, or let us know in advance if you need to borrow one.

WHY EDIT WIKIPEDIA?
Wikipedia is the internet’s go-to site for information, but lacks diversity in its editors and its articles. Only 1 in 5 biographies on English Wikipedia are about women. Women are not a minority and we can #BreakTheBias in the lack of stories currently shared on the open web. This event will focus on improving the representation of inspiring women who fought for #VotesForWomen in Scotland online.
