Take an hour out of your schedule and escape with the Sacconi Quartet and pianist Emma Abbate to the beautiful quire of Glasgow Cathedral, for a lunchtime concert featuring two beloved masterworks by Schubert and Shostakovich. Written over a century apart, both pieces are exemplary pillars of the chamber music repertory, with the expressive power to tug at your heartstrings whilst introducing your mind to new perspectives.
Praised for their ‘tangible and magical’ chemistry (The Scotsman), the Quartet – which recently celebrated its 21st anniversary – has a long-standing and rich association with ‘consummate chamber player’ Abbate (Classical Explorer). They begin their programme with Shostakovich’s piano quintet—celebrated for its ironic and vividly expressive take on archaic forms. The second half of the recital encompasses the longing sighs and brooding thoughts of Schubert’s 'Death and the Maiden'. Composed in 1824, shortly after the composer realised he was dying, this is the melancholic and deeply lyrical outpouring of an individual grappling with his destiny.
Dmitri Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G minor, Op.57
Franz Schubert String Quartet No.14 in D minor, 'Death and the Maiden'
