Film Screening: The Freedom Machine

About Film Screening: The Freedom Machine

Susan B Anthony famously called the bicycle a ‘freedom machine’, an opportunity for emancipation and independence. The Freedom Machine questions what freedom truly looks like for women cyclists.

Using archival footage from archives across the UK, and with a soundtrack by Catherine Hawthorne, The Freedom Machine shows how women have used the bicycle to find freedom - on the road, racetrack, and beyond.

We are delighted that the film’s director, Jo Reid, will join us for a discussion after the film.

The Freedom Machine is Produced by Glasgow Film Festival and supported by Glasgow Life 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships and Film Hub Scotland.

Certificate: U

Film running time: 40 minutes / Introduction: 10 minutes / Discussion: 25 minutes

The film will be captioned and accessible seating will be available. If you have any questions, please contact us at movingimage@nls.uk.
