Guided by our expert tutors, you will steadily build foundational skills in throwing, trimming, clay preparation, and glazing. With a strong emphasis on technique and understanding, this course prioritises mastering the basics, so you can expect to create 5-7 simple forms, such as cylinders, while developing confidence in your abilities.
Course Outline:
Week 1: Introduction to Throwing. Learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing, including centreing the clay and gaining height.
Week 2: Introduction to Trimming. After your pieces have dried, you'll be introduced to trimming, an essential skill to refine the shape and remove weight.
Week 3: Preparing Clay & Developing Throwing Skills. This week focuses on preparing your clay for the wheel and advancing your throwing techniques to improve control and consistency.
Week 4: Developing Trimming Skills. Build on the trimming techniques from Week 2, refining your pieces for a more professional look.
Week 5: Glazing. The final week introduces you to glazing techniques, where you’ll learn how to apply a simplistic decorative and protective coating to your pieces, preparing them for their final firing.

Firing of your completed pieces.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a selection of handmade pottery to take home and the basic skills needed to continue your pottery journey.
