This five-week Level 2 pottery course is designed for students who have foundational experience with wheel throwing and are ready to advance their skills by creating lidded vessels and complex forms. Each session will focus on a specific technique, from throwing closed forms to detailed glazing. By the end of the course, participants will have completed 3-6 lidded pieces, learning the intricacies of creating functional, well-fitted vessels with unique aesthetic touches.
Course Outline:
Week 1: Introduction to Throwing Closed Forms
Participants will learn the fundamentals of closing up a cylinder and creating indentations to form a gallery and flange.
Week 2: Introduction to Trimming Closed Forms
Students will be guided through the process of trimming, separating, and refining the jar forms created in the previous session.
Week 3: Throwing a Separate Gallery Form and Lid
Learn to create a sunken rim and a matching lid with a flange to fit your form seamlessly.
Week 4: Trimming and Adding a Flange to Lidded Vessels
Refine the pieces thrown the previous week, with an added focus on incorporating a flange onto the top of your lidded vessel.
Week 5: Glazing Techniques
The course wraps up with a session on glazing, emphasising careful waxing and glazing methods to ensure that the lidded vessels can be fired as one complete piece.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a selection of handmade pottery to take home and the basic skills needed to continue your pottery journey.
