Julie Brook, An Artist who works in the Landscape, Artist Talk and Screening

About Julie Brook, An Artist who works in the Landscape, Artist Talk and Screening

Since 1989 Julie Brook has been living and making artwork in remote landscapes in Scotland; Hoy, Orkney; the west coast of Jura; on the uninhabited island of Mingulay and Harris. She has also made sculptural interventions in landscapes further afield; working in Italian and Japanese quarries, different parts of the desert in Central and South West Libya, travelling with Tuareg guides; Syria and NW Namibia, travelling with Himba-Herero guides.

Brook works with the elemental conditions of light, tide, flame, time and site-specific stone. The work and landscapes are captured photographically; digitally and on super 8 film. She says of her work - "When I’m asked about the language of my work, I see it as both a response to my environment, and the expression of the environment’s effect on me. It’s a process, a rhythm which I initiate, but as it gets more involved, it too begins to dictate terms. And I must find a formal language that can express this. Solitude is the heart of the matter. It gives me a sense of inhabiting the landscape."

The House Arts Collective is an artist run space, we share artists studios, a workshop, an events and exhibition space. We are thrilled to welcome Julie Brook for an artist talk, presentation and screening of a short selection of some of her work on film as well as a short documentary of life with Brook and her process by Fran Robertson. We look forward to welcoming you; new and old friends to "The House" as well!

The House is wheelchair accessible, please get in touch with us via email to let us know of any accessibility needs : thehousebellstreet@gmail.com.
