Koma Rengê Welat, a music ensemble from northern Kurdistan + western Kurdistan will sing traditional songs of history, victory + resistance.
As part of Glasgow TUC's commitment to internationalism, this year we welcome Koma Rengê Welat, a music ensemble from northern Kurdistan and western Kurdistan, who sing traditional songs of history, victory and resistance.
Too keep Kurdish language alive and growing, we will be linking up with members of the Etigim Sen teaching union in Amed, where trade union activists who visited Glasgow in 2024 have been developing Kurdish language workshops to show how language rights affect social peace in terms of linguistic justice.
However, in recent weeks many of these trade unionists have been suspended or arrested along with student activists for protesting and striking against the installation of Turkish Government trustees following each region's municipal elections last March.
Join us for an opportunity to hear how cultural activism and resistance to the political targeting of the equivalent of Kurdish town councils are taking place, what practical solidarity we in Glasgow can provide and ensure their story is heard and amplified. And then Koma Rengê Welat will then take us into a music set to combine how those Kurdish language songs can inspire and describe a future where linguistic rights are integral to the liberation of oppressed communities.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
