Part of Mount Stuart Trust’s 30th Anniversary Year.

Mount Stuart Trust is delighted to announce From Brick to Building: Mount Stuart’s Development, a new exhibition which is now open and running until 31 August, the exhibition explores the extraordinary architectural journey of Mount Stuart – from its earliest incarnations to the magnificent Neo-Gothic masterpiece we know today.

Timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Trust opening the house and gardens to the public (celebrated on 16 June), the exhibition sheds light on the architects, masons and craftsmen who shaped Mount Stuart’s story and the imaginative vision of the 3rd Marquess of Bute, whose influence continues to resonate through the generations.

Through a combination of interpretation totems and original materials from the Bute Collection, the exhibition traces the family’s departure from Rothesay Castle, their move to the Mansion House, and the eventual commission of a new Georgian Mount Stuart, only for it to be devastated by fire in 1877 and entirely reimagined in stone, stained glass and symbolism.

Visitors will be able to view rare archival drawings, elevations, photographs, correspondence and design materials, many of which have never been displayed before. Items in the Armoury exhibition space will change each month, encouraging return visitors to discover something new.

The exhibition is included as part of a standard House & Gardens ticket. Access is via self-guided entry during normal opening hours, with tours bookable online. Monthly architectural talks will also be hosted by Lynsey Nairn, offering further insight into archival items not on general display. These will take place June 12, July 16, August 15.

This exhibition forms a key part of Mount Stuart Trust’s ongoing efforts to make the Bute Collection and its architectural significance more widely accessible – engaging with local communities, school groups, heritage enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike.
