Glasgow holds a world class selection of public, civic and professional libraries. From the original network of public libraries funded by Andrew Carnegie to the impressive collections held at the Mitchell or the University of Glasgow library, these institutions offer not just fascinating books and archives, but also reveal a fascinating history of access to this knowledge for Glaswegians.

This short course from the University of Glasgow offers you the chance to explore some of Glasgow’s impressive libraries and their part in local civic history, bringing to life the past and present purpose of academic, public, professional and specialist libraries in the city.

After a classroom-based lecture to set the scene at the University of Glasgow special collections, this course will offer 5 weekly guided visits and walks to various libraries in Glasgow.

Indicative sample class schedule:

Week 1 – Overview and history (classroom-based, on campus) University of Glasgow Special Collections and Hunter Library

Week 2 – Mitchell Library and city archives visit

Week 3 – Royal College of Physicians &Surgeons, walk, then Royal Faculty of Procurators

Week 4 – Visit to Hillhead Library, walk, visit to Partick library

Week 5 – Glasgow Women’s Library, then short walk to Bridgeton Library

This is subject to the availability of these institutions, and further changes are possible as we navigate between the wealth of libraries and archives in Glasgow.

During a series of five walks our expert tutor will explain:
- how you can “read” and understand the libraries and archives, looking at the architectural features and purpose of each site
- the social and cultural contexts in which Glasgow’s libraries and archives were developed
- You will also have the chance to discuss and reflect on what you learn with other students and the tutor while on location

Choose this course if you want to learn:
- the hidden history of Glasgow’s libraries and archives
- Their place in the community and their social and cultural context
