Image: Chef Liam Buckley gives blood three times per year and is appealing for more people to come to a Blood Donation Clinic on 20th January at Skypark and help to save a life.
Chef Liam Buckley who is based in Gather Café and is the ‘face’ of the Blood Donor Appeal at Skypark regularly donates blood. Liam is appealing to people of all ages who are new and existing donors to come forward to boost Scotland’s blood stocks and help to save a life.
"I donate blood three times a year and have attended the clinic at Skypark every time it's been on site," said Liam Buckley. "I'd encourage anyone to take part. Registering as a blood donor online was straightforward, and once I had my donor ID, booking an appointment by email or phone was easy.
"The process was quick and convenient, with plenty of appointment times that fitted easily around the working day. When the day came, the clinic was easy to find thanks to its central location on campus. Skypark is extremely accessible, with excellent transport links including the Exhibition Centre train station just 250 metres away, as well as nearby road, bus and cycle routes.
"From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed by friendly staff who put me at ease. The donation itself was comfortable and took around an hour. I felt fine afterwards and was able to head straight back to work, knowing I'd helped make a difference."
Pauline Stewart, Interim Head of Territory at SNBTS, said “Every day, Scotland needs around 450 blood donors to meet the needs of patients in hospitals across the country.
“With such a high demand for blood, donors at Skypark have a unique opportunity to make a powerful difference.
“By giving blood locally, you help ensure Scotland has enough blood for patients in urgent need.
“However, fewer people are donating than before, and that puts pressure on Scotland’s blood supply. I am urging both new and returning donors to come forward to help ensure lifesaving blood is always available.
“The fact that less than two per cent of the population are actively giving blood is a concerning trend. In the last 10 years we have seen a drop of 24 per cent - which is just under 30,000 donors.
“We are also seeing a particular challenge around younger people coming forward. The blood supply has been maintained by our regular donors giving more often, but we really need new donors, or those who have not given for some time, to come forward.”
