Mrs Brown’s Boys’ actor Gary Hollywood and Britain’s Got Talent’s Edward Reid are ‘Grabbing Life by the Balls’ and starring in a concert for ex-Hoops hero John Hartson’s testicular cancer charity.
Edward will go back to his musical theatre roots by joining the 70-strong Glasgow Studio Orchestra for a night of spine-tingling music from the soundtracks of some of the world’s scariest movies and musicals including Jaws, The Little Shop of Horrors, Star Wars, Aliens, and Psycho.
He said: "I’m very excited to be involved and have been asked to sing two songs from contemporary musical theatre shows. I’ve chosen Phantom and Jekyll and Hyde to keep with the horror theme - so being able to go back to my roots as a musical theatre singer is brilliant. The charity is amazing and I hope to be able to get more involved."
Gary is hosting the family fun night for the John Hartson Foundation which also features former River city star Pamela Byrne – who played hairdresser Hayley McCrone – along with Glasgow-based singers Natalie Estelle James, Lisa McKechnie and the Glasgow Studio Orchestra singers.
The pro-am Glasgow Studio Orchestra is conducted by Strathclyde University lecturer Iain Massey whose career as a violist has seen him play with the Orchestra of Scottish Ballet and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Made up of current and former students who are now young professional musicians and music teachers throughout the central belt, the orchestra specialises in music from the stage and screen.
Iain said: “We are thrilled to be working with the John Hartson Foundation. Most of us will be aware of the devastating effects cancer can have, perhaps through family or friends, and we’re looking forward to providing an exciting night of entertainment which will ultimately help raise funds for such a good cause.”
The John Hartson Foundation was set up by the former Celtic, Arsenal and Wales star following his battle with testicular cancer which spread to his lungs and brain.
The Spells, Psychos and Lightsabers concert takes place in the Crowne Plaza ballroom, Congress Street, Glasgow, on Wednesday, November 6, from 7.30pm. The fun night will also feature music for children – including the Harry Potter soundtrack – and a kids’ fancy dress competition.
