Every website you’ve ever visited, anywhere in the world, has one thing in common – it’s been created by someone, somewhere and written in code.
Learning how to code is as easy as learning your ABC - you just need to know how to speak the language of computers. This summer, Glasgow Libraries is offering young people aged 8-17 the chance to learn the secret language of code and create their very own computer games, apps, websites and much more, in regular clubs across the city.
Coder-in-Residence, Dr Martin Goodfellow, explains why learning how to code is a great way to spend your summer holidays. He said: “Every day, our world is becoming more and more reliant on technology, so it’s important that people aren’t just digital consumers – we should all be the digital makers, and that’s why we run these free sessions for young people in Glasgow.
“Anyone can learn to code or to think like a computer, you don’t have to be a computer genius. Not everyone who learns how to write does so because they want to be a professional writer. They do it to help them with everyday life. The same can be said about coding. Not everyone who learns to code is doing so because they want to be software engineers – they’re doing it because it’s fun and helps them to understand the world around them.”
“If you’ve ever played a game or visited a website and wondered how you could make your own you’ll find coding fun. In our coding clubs, you shape what you learn – the only limit is your imagination.”
So, if you’re aged 8-17 and fancy creating your own games, or want to know how you can develop a website or app, build your own games console or turn fruit into a keyboard, visit www.youngglasgow.org.uk/0-11 and book yourself on to the free coding sessions.
If coding really isn’t your thing don’t despair as there are more than 100 free activities running across Glasgow as part of the Young Glasgow holiday programme.
Fancy yourself as a bit of a dancer? Then Molendinar Community Centre is offering you the chance to dust off your dancing shoes and take to the floor in some action-packed dance sessions. Sessions are free to attend with expert tuition provided by A&M training.
If you’ve got two left feet then skip the dancing and try your hand at being a detective. Discover the world right under your nose by joining up with the Queens Park Explorers Club, or play to your more inquisitive side and take yourself off on a fun-filled treasure hunt at Castlemilk Library.
If sport’s more your thing, why not make a big splash this summer? Glasgow Young Scot and Kidz Card holders get free swimming at any of our 12 Glasgow Club pools. And once you’re finished at the pool, a free Kidz Card (5-11) or Glasgow Young Scot Card (12-18) will also you free Take 2 screenings at the Glasgow Film Theatre every Saturday, and loads of other great discounts across town, plus it also doubles up as a library card.
If you haven’t got a card yet, it’s not too late to sign up for one online, just visit www.youngglasgow.org.uk or pick up an application form at your local library.
So, whether you’re sporty or techy, a dancer or an artist, make the most of your summer with the Young Glasgow Holiday Programme. Visit www.youngglasgow.org.uk to find out what amazing activities are on offer on your doorstep.
