Created to celebrate one of Glasgow’s most famous artists, the shopping centre’s competition ‘Mackintosh: The Innovator’, encourages school pupils to create their own art and design works based on Mackintosh’s unique style.
The initiative was established by St. Enoch Centre and Glasgow Mackintosh to encourage secondary school pupils to think creatively about Mackintosh’s legacy and his focus on innovation. Pupils from Govan, Williamwood, Notre Dame and Hillhead will take part in the competition.
The competition is split into two categories, design and expressive, with the winning school in each category receiving £200. Winning individuals also receive vouchers worth up to £100 to spend at St. Enoch Centre.
All entries will be displayed for several months in a specially constructed gallery within the centre. Shoppers are invited to visit the exhibition and nominate their top submissions before an expert judging panel gives its view. Among the acclaimed judges are Stuart Robertson, Chair of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, art critic and author Jan Patience, Dr Robyne Calvert, Mackintosh Research Fellow at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) and Celia Sinclair, founder of The Willow Tea Rooms Trust.
The exhibition will form part of Glasgow’s annual Mackintosh Festival which this year celebrates the 150th anniversary of the artist and architect’s birth. 2018 is also the Year of Young People in Scotland, which aims to highlight the contribution of young Scots to culture and the arts.
Anne Ledgerwood, general manager of St. Enoch Centre, said: “This is the 10th year St. Enoch Centre has run a school arts project and we are thrilled to see so many pupils get involved. We’ve really enjoyed meeting the pupils from Hillhead High taking part in our Mackintosh art and design competition this year, and it was great to see them working so hard on their submissions.
“We are looking forward to seeing the finished pieces from all four schools and displaying them in the centre. We hope that the competition has inspired youngsters to develop their artistic skills, and appreciate the fantastic work Mackintosh created.”
Hillhead High School head of art and design, Ross Reid said: “It’s great to see so many of our pupils getting involved in the Mackintosh art and design competition.
“This is a special year, with 2018 not only being the 150th anniversary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s birth, but also the Year of Young People. Our pupils are giving it their absolute all and are taking this opportunity to showcase some of their best work.”
