The new season of shows, which take place in a cabaret setting in the City of Music Studio at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, begins on Saturday 27 October and takes its bow on Saturday 22 December.
In the season opener, Australian vocalist Becc Sanderson leads her sextet in an unabashed celebration of David Bowie. The show, entitled, Bows to Bowie, includes tracks from classic albums such as Heroes, Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust, Le’s Dance and Hunky Dory.
In Embodying the Light, the Tommy Smith Quartet pays homage to John Coltrane. The night will see favourite pieces by the iconic saxophonist including Naima, Dear Lord and Resolution performed alongside Smiths own compositions inspired by his musical hero.
Bringing together two generations of musicians from very different backgrounds, emerging Scottish quartet Square One continue their international partnership with leading Vienna-based American saxophonist Andy Middleton. The artists launch their new album, Double Bind, with their performance at Late Night Studio Jazz.
The season also sees the Scottish performance premier of The Tim Kliphuis Trio’s Brandenburg album, showcasing their high energy brand of gypsy jazz, classical and folk. The Trio’s return to Glasgow also features Django and Grappelli gems.
The Brodie Jarvie Quintet stars a diverse group of musicians from across Europe and South Korea performing compositions described as an anthem of a Celtic fairyland.
Saxophonist Paul Towndrow celebrates his 40th birthday in style, leading a 16 piece string orchestra with a star studded jazz rhythm section in homage to Charlie Parker. A late night jam session packed with surprise guests and performances follows the concert.
The Late Night Studio Jazz seasons concludes in style, with a rare Scottish performance by Carol Kidd of a range of songs from the great era of American songbook. Accompanied by Brian Kellock on piano, Kidd’s voice always thrills, with her impeccable timing and deep emotional impact.
As an added treat for jazz fans, this December at Glasgow Royal Concert the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra(SNJO) celebrate jazz legends Count Basie and Duke Ellington, performing their landmark albums, The Atomic Mr Basie and Ellington's Black, Brown & Beige in full for the first time in the SNJO’s 23 year history.
Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life and Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The Late Night Studio Jazz season presented by Glasgow UNESCO City of Music is a highlight of the calendar for jazz lovers, with home grown stars and international talent performing an irresistible range of compositions.
“The musicians own passion for the work they bring to the shows is infectious and shared by the audiences, who this year can enjoy classic favourites and work that explores the endless possibilities of jazz in new ways.”
