Group of dads transform Ruchazie Woodlands for community to enjoy
Hard work and dedication of the Dad's Group from Quarriers Ruchazie Family Resource Centre has seen the transformation of a run-down wasteland into woodlands for all the community to enjoy!

Work to clear the woodlands began last summer when the dads decided to turn it into something positive for their children and the local community and after months of effort the area has been revitalised and now includes decorations and even a fairy house.
Rhonda McKinney, Deputy Manager of Quarriers Ruchazie Family Resource Centre, said: “The transformation of the wasteland has been incredible. The dads remembered it as a place where they would go and drink when they were younger but they have worked very hard to clear the area and the project has helped to create a sense of pride in the local area.
“The dads themselves have also benefited from the project which has had a positive impact on their wellbeing. One dad in particular was going through a difficult time and focusing on creating something positive helped him to get through it.”
The new woodlands have been welcomed by the local community and a number of groups have already benefited from the space including the relaxation group for mums who enjoyed outdoor activities around a campfire as well as the much-needed peace and quiet of being outdoors.
Rhonda added: “Children from the nursery, the Funday Monday group as well as Elmcroft Nursery have had great fun and have also been able to learn about insects. It was especially rewarding to see the positive impact on one boy who had a phobia of spiders and how he overcame it by first seeing them and eventually being able to handle them in the woods.
“It has also encouraged the youngsters to use their imaginations and they were inspired by the book ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’ to go for an adventure in the woods.
“Thanks to the generosity of a local company the children have also been able to get out in all weathers as they have kindly donated warm, waterproof jackets to ensure that the youngsters can have fun whatever it is rain, hail or even snow.”
