The curator, Alison Donnell, has close affinity with the charity, through previous hosting of our art exhibitions. However, this year has a timely significance following her daughter Gillian’s diagnosis of cancer.
This exhibition focuses on an eclectic selection of artwork including some specially commissioned pieces and running from 11 May 2020 it has been designed to recognise and celebrate excellence in Scottish talent and beyond.
Gillian was diagnosed in April 2019 with cervical cancer which led to a complete lifestyle change, which is often a side effect of having any cancer diagnosis. However, the support given from Beatson Cancer Charity has allowed Gillian to reassess her future and make some positive steps to hopefully return to working with her beloved horses and gaining her equestrian teaching qualifications.
Alison, owner of Studio Fine Art Company contemplates her daughter’s journey: “Gillian was a fit and healthy young woman who loved horse-riding. Gillian's planned wedding this year to her fiancé Alan, who works for the NHS, was postponed as sadly they were facing an unknown future.”
“Apart from the cancer itself, the consequences of this diagnosis were almost too much for her to bear, however the kindness and support given to Gillian by the Beatson Cancer Charity during her subsequent treatment and several hospital stays made a very difficult time more bearable. One year on and Gillian's journey is not over yet but knowing Beatson Cancer Charity are there for her every step of the way has meant so much to her.”
Alison was keen that the annual art exhibition would go ahead as planned – and it was agreed an online format (with free delivery) would still reach out to those lovers of art and especially those supporters of the Beatson Cancer Charity Art Exhibition. The event offers a wide range of art to suit all tastes with pieces from acclaimed Scottish and local artists; Peter Howson, Gerard Burns, Graham McKean, Ryan Mutter and Elaine Johnston.
By purchasing a piece of artwork, this helps support the way cancer care is funded and delivered via our colleagues at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
Morag Cunningham, Beatson Cancer Charity Director of Fundraising said: “This has become a personal mission for Gillian's mother and curator for the annual Beatson Cancer Charity Art Exhibition. The event has become a significant date in our annual events calendar, but this year has become extra special. It has brought home, that cancer can affect any one of us at any time.’ ‘I know Alison and family are forever grateful to our charity. Please support the online exhibition in any way you can this year. You never know when you or family members may need our charity and its services.”
Please take a look at the art on sale now at the dedicated website www.beatsoncancercharityartexhibition.org, with pieces starting from £95 and donation packages from £10. Excitingly for each piece of art purchased, or any donation made, you will be entered into a free draw with the opportunity to win a £500 piece of original art from artist Elaine Johnston.
