This weekend saw the anticipated return of a physical market for artists and creators in Glasgow, which welcomed over two thousand attendees visiting the city’s former fish market.
Wasps, Scotland’s national provider of artist studios, hosted the Summer Artists and Makers Market at Glasgow’s The Briggait on Saturday 4 September and Sunday 5 September, postponed from August due to bad weather, with seventy stalls offering ceramics, jewellery and textiles, greetings cards and original works of art.
Vendors at this weekend’s Artists and Makers Market included creators such as ceramicist Eleanor Caie, art-meets-food collective the Artists’ Tuck Shop, printmaker Ashley Cook, graphic designer and photographer Alasdair Dimmick, jeweller Nmarra Design and craft designer Silenzio Studio.
Free stall places for Wasps’ next market were awarded to the stallholders with the most captivating presentations, and two winners were selected; artist and Briggait tenant Allan Campbell, and Comrie-based jeweller Laura Grace Caldwell from Wear With Grace.
It is the first time Wasps has hosted a market in Glasgow since the pandemic, though they have been running these events at The Briggait since 2017. Wasps acquired the lease for The Briggait in 2009 and developed the building to accommodate 45 artist studios and 25 offices for creative industries, social enterprises and charities. The Briggait is currently being considered for improvement, and the local community is being consulted to help shape the vision of any potential new regeneration project.
Wasps Chief Executive Officer Audrey Carlin: “It was a pleasure welcoming visitors to this year’s summer markets, something we’ve been looking forward to hosting for a while. It’s a tremendous opportunity for our tenants and the wider artist community to engage with potential customers and reveal to the public what fantastic creations emerge from these buildings and beyond.”
The next market at The Briggait will be well-placed for festive shopping, appearing on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December 2021. To apply for a stall for the Wasps’ Festive Market potential vendors are asked to email Projects@waspsstudios.org.uk.
