Clyde 1 and the First Minister celebrate International Womens Day
Scotland's First Minister joins Clyde 1 to discuss challenges facing her and other women this International Women's Day.

In an exclusive interview this International Women’s Day, Scotland’s first female First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, talks about her experiences and ambitions in politics as a woman on Clyde 1 and across the Hit Radio Network Scotland (Forth 1, West FM, MFR, Northsound 1, TAY FM and Radio Borders) today (Tuesday 8th March).
The First Minister joined Clyde 1 to mark International Women’s Day and discuss the challenges women, including herself, face due to gender inequality and stereotyping.
Ms Sturgeon highlights some of the barriers she came across as a female politician, including being held to standards not expected of her male counterparts.
She said: “I know there were attitudes, mindsets and behaviours that held me back... that would include being treated differently because of my gender. So behaviours which in men are seen as strong and empowered, in women, are seen as off-putting.
“One of the things that was often said about me when I was younger in politics was that I never smiled. As well as thinking that wasn’t true, it was something you would never hear being said about a man.”
The interview comes as part of the network’s celebration of International Women’s Day across Scotland which will include inspirational content and playing non-stop female artists from 6am to midnight on Tuesday 8th March.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias, something the First Minister is encouraging of.
The First Minister said: “International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress we’ve made towards gender equality, but perhaps more importantly, to look at the progress that we still need to make, because we do not yet live in a gender equal country, or a gender equal world.
“I would say to young women interested in politics either as a campaign activist, or standing for elected office, please do so. Don’t allow the toxic culture that we so often work in these days, to put you off.”
