Paul is known to many for his online sketches which have been viewed over half a billion times and garnered him a cult following, but along the way, he has managed to transfer those online views into real life audiences. This success has come through stand-up comedy as well as his TV shows.
Sticking to the stand up for now, Paul is back on stage with All Sorts – a multimedia show that blends sketches, stand-up, and all sorts of daft nonsense. His fans will be delighted to know that some of his well-loved characters will be making a return along with a few brand new ones. Black will also be joined by frequent comedy collaborators Mark Black and Alana Malone.
After building a large online following with his comedy sketches, Paul has written, directed, and starred in Pity Party, a sketch show special for BBC Scotland, a Hogmanay Comedy Special First Footing and Nostalgia (BBC iPlayer). Paul, his brother Mark and longtime friend Alana have also previously worked together on sketches for BBC Scotland’s Short Stuff platform, amassing millions of viewers.
Paul has taken an unusual route into comedy by starting his career on social media sites such as TikTok and Instagram before taking to the stage. He was crowned the most influential Scot on TikTok in December last year. Paul’s stand up material is particularly attuned to class and queer identity. He is more than happy to talk about the obstacles he has encountered along the way from class barriers and the constant need to be writing and creating work – and if not doing that then looking like he is!
Paul Black says: “We had a belter performing All Sorts at the fringe and can't wait to bring it home to Glasgow. Playing the SEC in 2022 was amazing and we're buzzing to do it all over again.”
Paul began his live comedy career in 2021 with two sold out shows at the Gilded Balloon’s Castle Terrace and then went on to sell out his entire run in 2022 and 2023. His 2023 show Nostalgia was nominated for the Sir Billy Connolly Spirit of Glasgow Award at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival and was recorded in Aberdeen’s Music Hall for a stand-up special on BBC iPlayer after completing a sold-out tour.
After All Sorts Paul will be appearing at the Glasgow Comedy Festival in 2025 and has several irons in the comedy fire with plans for a musical, film and a lot more writing.
Paul Black: All Sorts will be at the SEC Armadillo, Glasgow on Friday 22 November, final tickets on sale now.
