At the heart of our increasingly screen-oriented world lies a paradox. A screen can be a portal to seemingly boundless experiences, but it can also get in the way of connection. Both window and partition, the last year has brought this powerful tension of the screen not just closer to home, but firmly indoors in all aspects of our lives.
How does the resonance of a work change for a fragmented, wider audience in front of - or behind - screens? Is there a way to embrace these changes to create visionary artworks?
Elpida Stathatou, star, writer and director of Umbilical, and Zinnie Harris, writer and director of A Glimpse (winner of the Short Drama award at SMAHF 2021), have extensive backgrounds in theatre, as well as filmmaking. Their work is distinctly authored and bold, covering themes of grief, the uncanny and lived experience.
Facilitated by the award-winning playwright, performer and poet, Hannah Lavery, whose own work with the National Theatre of Scotland, Lament for Sheku Bayoh, was live streamed towards the end of 2020.
