Though the songs were written before the pandemic, recent events lent uncanny pertinence to Kate Stables’s intricately crafted lyrics about shattered frequencies, interrupted lives, solitude and anxiety. “When I was mixing the album, it was right at the peak of the first wave of Covid and so I was hearing all my lyrics through this new filter and it was a pretty weird experience,” she has said. Clever instrumentals artfully enhance the mood of music that’s intense, but inspirational and life-enhancing.
Roddy Woomble performs songs from his latest solo album, Lo! Soul. Partly inspired by a line of Walt Whitman poetry (Lo! the unbounded sea … ), it’s been described as the Idlewild frontman’s “most creatively expansive record to date”. Produced and recorded remotely during lockdown from his Hebridean home, in collaboration with Idlewild bandmate Andrew Mitchell, it blends Woomble’s own poetry with wonderful electronic grooves supplied by his friend, Danny Grant. Poignantly reflecting the singular times we’ve been living through, these songs will touch listeners’ hearts.
