We will be raising funds for the charities Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees, and Stand Up To Racism, while aiming to raise awareness about barriers faced by refugees in Glasgow, and some of the reactionary activist work in Glasgow's recent history.
The event will start with a work-in-progress film by José Maria Martinelli, in which he interviews Glasgow activists Margaret Woods and Jock Morris about their experience working with refugees in the 1990s. Through personal accounts, Jock and Margaret narrate hidden histories of both racism and resistance in Glasgow in the 1990s, which serve to inspire anti-racist action today.
Next, we are delighted to be welcoming Pinar Aksu, a human rights activist, global campaigner, and Development Officer at Maryhill Integration Network. We will then hear from the two charities: Jock Morris as chair of Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees, and a representative from Stand Up To Racism who will be joining us.
The event is free and no booking is required. There will be the opportunity to donate in cash or card at the event. The Alchemy Staff will be volunteering their time, so all proceeds will be divided equally between the two charities.
We hope to see you there!
The Glasgow Welcomes Refugees Fundraiser at The Alchemy Experiment (157 Byres Road), from 7-9pm on Thursday 18th August 2022.
