Tom Bancroft’s In Common create a fusion of jazz, Indian classical music, Scottish traditional music and electronica. They celebrate the (surprisingly) many features that these genres have in common. This project by Tom Bancroft started with the bodhran and the tabla and a drone, added Indian Classical Violin and improvising jazz guitar, folk song and jazz singers, and continued adding layers and voices from different traditions, in a creative evolving project that focuses on the common ground. This collective’s incredible line-up includes Sharat Chandra Srivastava (violin), Gyan Singh (tabla), Tom Bancroft (bodhran & drums), Graeme Stephen (guitar & loops), Sophie Bancroft (voice) and Gina Rae (voice).
Tom Bancroft said: “It’s fantastic to be getting out and performing live again, especially with the In Common group - which is a celebration of different cultures and musical styles coming together in the same room and creating magic - and the audience plays a big part in that process.
“This project is very close to my heart and thanks to this initiative I am getting the opportunity to showcase it at a fantastic variety of venues. This gig is going to be so much fun and the whole band are really looking forward to it, and meeting people in really interesting places and playing music for them.”
Scotland on Tour will take place over a 12 month period between April 2022 and 2023, the remaining concerts taking place at the National Piping Centre are Fiona Kennedy & Friends on Thursday 22nd September, Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton Trio on Friday 23rd September, Seonaid Aitken on Saturday 29th October, and Mairi Campbell In Concert on Thursday 10th November.
Finlay MacDonald, Director of Piping at The National Piping Centre, said: “We are delighted to be hosting some fantastic gigs as part of Scotland on Tour. Tom Bancroft’s In Common is an exceptional project and one that I am really excited to welcome this September. The fusion of jazz, Indian classical music, Scottish traditional music and electronica is completely unique and I love the surprising correlations they have identified between these diverse musical genres. It’s definitely set to be a great night of brilliant entertainment with these world-class musicians.”
