Improv Quilting is the act of patching together the fabric of your life, without following a pattern. There are no rules, just experimentation. You might want to make a quilt that connects into your memory of a place or feeling. Fabric is so much a part of the fabric of our lives, and Improv Quilting gives a space to reflect, rethink and re-envision our story.
In these sessions we will encourage you to work with old fabric - bits of material from your fabric stash, old dresses that no longer fit, the holiday frock that you bought on a whim, your favourite jeans that are so threadbare you can no longer repair them, an old boyfriends T-shirt you can’t bear to part with, etc, to make something new and treasured for your home.
The Gees Bend Quilters from Alabama showed the world that art can be forged out of torn jeans, worn-out overalls and faded tea towels. These women didn’t have an ethos of “reduce, reuse, recycle” because they were eco-warriors, rather theirs was an ethos born out of poverty. These descendants of slaves in America’s south, created art where others might have seen none.
The modernist quilts they created out of threadbare scraps are now collectors pieces hanging in many modern art galleries of America, but their real legacy is the movement they have inspired of Improv Quilting.
No sewing experience necessary.
2.5-hour sessions, £15/session drop-in
