‘The Massacre of Glencoe’, ‘The Barras’, ‘Smile in Your Sleep’ and ‘The Shores of Sutherland’ are only four of the many songs McLean has written over the past 60 years.
Now, in his 85th year, one of folk music’s most prolific songwriters is still producing new gems. His Scottish Republican views flavour many of his songs. However, there is a great deal of West Coast wit in others where he takes a lighthearted swipe at the Monarchy.
His main grievance is the Highland clearances and the stories within several of his songs open our eyes to historical truths.
This year, a group of Scottish musicians (Alastair McDonald, Ian Bruce, Sylvia Barnes, Fraser Bruce & Gavin Paterson) have recorded 60 of his songs now released as a 4CD box-set with song book.
The official launch of the box-set will be followed by a concert featuring several of the singers and musicians who created this wonderful collection.
A fitting testament to the genius that is McLean.
