Beginner Classes - Tuesdays, 7-7.50pm
Suitable for those with no experience of this, or any other dance style. Each week, we'll start with the basic step, then build up your dance "vocabulary" of key classic moves. No partner is necessary as we rotate partners throughout the class.
Improver Classes - Tuesdays, 8.10-9pm
Suitable for those who have more experience, and have attended our Beginners classes for a couple of blocks, or who have learned balboa elsewhere. Learn fancy moves and more complicated sequences; build your knowledge of technique and leading and following skills. Again, no partner necessary.
What to expect
Like tango, balboa is a close hold dance, where partners lead and follow through body contact.
We encourage dancers to wear shoes with "slip" in the sole, to enable them to pivot and slide on the floor. Traditionally, followers wore shoes with a heel, and leaders, flat shoes, but nowadays that is your own personal choice.
Wear layers in case you get too hot.
Bring a bottle of water which you can refill in the kitchen next door.
After/before class stick around/come early so you can practise what you've learned during our social/practice time from 7.50-8.10pm.
A Bit of History
Balboa belongs to the swing dance family of dances which includes lindyhop, blues dance, collegiate shag and jazz dance. It was born in the "Jazz Age" in the 1930s, on the Balboa peninsula of Southern California, USA. As it was often danced on packed dancefloors, it developed a close hold with intricate and fancy footwork with occasional forays into open hold. Nowadays, most people dance bal-swing which has a mixture of moves in close and open hold. Balboa is danced all over the world - from Korea to Australia, the USA, throughout Europe and now here in Glasgow!
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
