A string of concerts and masterclasses will take place between November 2nd and 5th as part of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's Big Guitar Weekend!
Thursday 2nd November – Sunday 5th November: Big Guitar Weekend Course
The Big Guitar Weekend course runs alongside the festival and provides guitarists of all abilities the opportunity to study with our world-class faculty at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. It is open to guitarists from nine years of age to adult and is designed to support guitarists of all ages and abilities, including the most serious/advanced young pre-professional/professional guitarists in training.
Guitarists who sign up to the course will receive lessons with RCS Guitar faculty, tickets to all performances and access to exclusive events only open to course attendees.
Thursday 2nd November: RCS Guitar Prize
In this first event of the Big Guitar Weekend, RCS Guitar Department students present varied programmes exploring the instrument’s repertoire in competition for the RCS Guitar Prize.
Thursday 2nd November: Kevin MacKenzie - The Spaces Between
Kevin MacKenzie leads this performance celebrating and encouraging collaboration in Guitar across the Jazz and Traditional Music departments.
Friday 3rd November: Sean Shibe & RSC Strings
RCS Associate Artist of Guitar Sean Shibe returns to RCS to present a programme including Traditional Scottish lute manuscripts and works by Bach, Mompou and RCS Lecturer in Composition David Fennessy.

As Big Guitar Weekend continues, RCS Associate Artist Sean Shibe discusses RCS Lecture in Composition David Fennessy’s guitar work Rosewoods.
Friday 3rd November: Ian Watt and Eddie McGuire - Writing For The Guitar
In this panel as part of Big Guitar Weekend, Scottish guitarists and composers Ian Watt and Eddie McGuire lead a discussion on composing guitar music.
This event will also feature the premiere of Eddie McGuire’s Nocturne and Sunrise performed by Ian Watt & an RCS Guitar Quartet.
Friday 3rd November: Samrat Majumder & Ian Watt
RCS Alumni Samrat Majumder returns to RCS for a programme exploring Spanish works for guitar including Nárvaez, Sor and Albeniz.
Ian Watt takes to the stage in the second half of this concert to celebrate Scottish composer Eddie McGuire on his 75th with a performance of his work Amazonia, and a programme with strong thematic links and influence on McGuire’s compositions.
Saturday 4th November: RCS Juniors Guitars
The Big Guitar Weekend continues with a fantastic showcase of young musical talent as the RCS Juniors Guitars students take the stage.
Saturday 4th November: Duo Ramelli-Savigni & Sasha Savaloni
Duo Ramelli-Savigni & Sasha Savaloni share the stage in two programmes celebrating wide ranging works for guitar, from Dowland’s early music all the way through to Ramelli’s own composition Sketching the horizon on a cloudy path & RCS Composition Lecturer Stuart MacRae’s Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.
Sunday 5th November: Scottish Schools Ensemble Guitar Competition
Guitar Ensembles from across Scotland compete with the hope of winning this coveted competition.
