Join us as an individual or as a family group for an afternoon of Day of the Dead related crafting, building our very own 'Ofrenda' ("Offering") altar box to remember and celebrate the lives of dead loved ones.
Artist Greer Pester is a Scottish visual and social artist who spent many years researching Days of the Dead creative practices in Mexico between 2012-2019. She lived there for 4 years and takes great inspiration from these magical crafts and traditions practiced during the remarkable Dias de los muertos.
She will guide you through some of her experiences of these while building our own ofrenda /altar boxes to be placed in your home during the days leading up to 31st of Oct - 2nd of November as a means to invite, remember and celebrate the lives of the dead.
These altar-type boxes are amalgamations of Catholic and ancient indigenous practices and can be adapted to whichever faith or beliefs individuals do or do not carry.
They have active components and are sensory splendours, typically with fresh flowers, incense and foods laid out for the visiting spirits. We will try our hand at making sugar skulls and perforated paper decorations called papel picado along with miniature food plate sculptures to build and fill our box with memories and sensory decorations. There will be a break to try some traditional Mexican hot chocolate and dead bread too, delicious!
All of the materials will be provided however you are encouraged to bring your own chosen personal items: photos, small trinkets, special fabric for box decoration, food or drink as offerings to your dead loved ones.
We welcome you for an afternoon packed with reflection, crafting, community and connection.
Investment: £55
