Sam says that acrylic is the most user-friendly and versatile paint currently available. It can give watercolour-style translucent washes of colour or thick textured strokes, reminiscent of oils. Modern technology means that acrylics now have the quality and richness to rival traditional painting media; they are non-toxic, water soluble, quick drying and a pleasure to work with.
This second Exploring Acrylics session will focus on underpainting techniques in water-based media and is suitable for beginners and improvers.
We will provide an introduction to using a colour-limited palette, painting and removal, and negative space. We will complete short exercises exploring 3 different types of underpainting techniques. Students will pick two of the techniques learnt and produce two studies. Sam will demonstrate a limited palette painting after which students will try to produce a more detailed in-depth study using a limited palette of 3-4 colours. Students will leave knowing how to plan and start a painting in acrylics; how to make various underpaintings using different colours and methodology; and how to implement a limited palette.
The Loggia at Pollokshields Burgh Hall is a beautiful space surrounded by the greenery of Maxwell Park. It's a perfect location to relax and enjoy learning new skills. Access to the Loggia, is via the glass doors at the rear of the building when the main building is shut.
Wear old clothes or bring an apron to cover up - acrylic painting is exceptionally messy.
