Join us for a special film screening to continue to campaign for #RefugeesWelcome
SUTR Glasgow would like to invite you to a special film screening of The Old Oak, directed by Ken Loach and written by Paul Laverty, the film screening will be part of SUTR Glasgow's series of events leading up to demonstrations on March 16th that are being held worldwide, in Glasgow, London and Cardiff in solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers and against racism.
The protest in Glasgow is focusing on the horrendous racist scapegoating from the government of refugees and asylum seekers and the protest will assemble at 11am at the BBC building before marching to the Home Office in Glasgow.
With the far right targeting hotels in Scotland, it is more important that ever to show our solidarity with asylum seekers and refugees fleeing war, persecution, climate change and poverty.
The film screening will be followed by a panel of local anti-racist campaigners, refugee rights activists and more. There will be opportunity for discussion and questions. Speakers TBA.
About the film
The Old Oak is a special place. Not only is it the last pub standing, but it’s also the only remaining public space where people can meet in a once-thriving mining community that has seen thirty hard years of decline. TJ Ballantyne, the landlord, hangs on to The Old Oak by his fingertips, and his predicament is endangered even more when the pub becomes contested territory after the arrival of Syrian refugees who are placed in the village without any notice. In an unlikely friendship, TJ meets a curious young Syrian woman, Yara, who has a camera. Can they find a way for the two communities to understand each other?
