About Trishna Singh OBE - Creative Writing Workshop (Memoirs)

International Women’s Day provides an important opportunity to recognise the achievements of women globally and reflect on the need for further work in achieving gender equality. This year celebrations focus on inspiring inclusion, highlighting the importance of enhancing diversity and empowerment, to create a better world where all women are valued and included.

In this spirit we welcome Trishna Singh OBE to the Mitchell Library for an introductory creative writing workshop, in which she will give tips and advice on how to get started writing a memoir. In this inspiring and informative session Trishna will explore the specific barriers women can face, especially from BAME communities, in getting started writing and ultimately getting published.

Trishna Singh OBE is the author of the powerful and poignant memoir ‘A Silent Voice Speaks: The Wee Indian Woman on the Bus’ which tells the story of her life in Scotland. Born in Glasgow in the 1950s, a first-generation Scottish Bhat Sikh, she left school at the age of 13, with no qualifications. At age 21 she had an arranged marriage and moved to Edinburgh to live with her husband. As a young girl, she questioned the cultural requirements of her community which stated that married women were subservient to their mothers-in-law and their husbands, and existed solely to have children and look after their families, in direct opposition to the teachings of the Sikh religion which states man and woman are equal. And although Trishna's marriage was a marriage of equals, she was still expected to adhere to the social and cultural restrictions placed upon her by the wider Scottish Bhat Sikh community.

Trishna is the founder of the Leith Sikh Community Group, with over 30 years experience working in the voluntary sector and hopes her memoir will encourage young BAME women to follow their dreams, as she did.
