About Film Screening: Kill It And Leave This Town

Beetroots Collective in collaboration with Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre, presents the Scottish premiere of 'Kill It and Leave This Town’ directed by Mariusz Wilczyński, professor of animation at the Lodz Film School in Poland.

Emerging on the festival circuit in 2021, this feature-length animation won major prizes at the Viennale, Ottawa and Annecy festivals as well as in Poland. The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw selected it as one of his "should have been a contender" animations for the Oscars in 2021. The New York Times referred to Wilczyński as “one of the most important artists of contemporary art-house animation”. Wilczyński worked on 'Kill It and Leave this Town’ for 14 years.

A deeply touching, family story set in 1970's Poland, the film explores personal loss and draws you in to a land of memories where time stands still. It is a dark, satirical and psychological horror film which may appeal to fans of Otto Dix, Samuel Beckett, Jan Švankmajer and the Neue Sachlichkeit. Polish-speaking audiences may recognise the voices of the Polish film industry elite: K. Janda, B. Kraftówna, A. Wajda, A. Chyra, A. Dymna, M. Kondrat, D. Olbrychski and many more. With a soundtrack provided by the late composer Tadeusz Nalepa, the music creates a piercingly sad mood and a raw, intense atmosphere which makes use of rock-guitar riffs from the ’70s Polish band Breakout.
