Join us for the ARC Winter Concert, and discover the festive magic of jazz and its stories. This event features a talk about festive jazz songs by Dr Marian Jago, music researcher from the University of Edinburgh. Following this, there'll be music from Glasgow based Jazz trio, the Stone Combo.
Talk: I’ll Be Home For Christmas: Nostalgia, Popular Culture, and the Christmas Song
There’s something about the sound of Christmas that is both timeless and seemingly universal – a sonic constancy that helps project us into the ‘holiday season’ year after year. As many other aspects of our individual approaches to Chistmas may change over time, the music that underscores this time of year … somehow doesn’t. This talk will take a quick look at the phenomena of the Christmas song in western popular music and try to unpick the affective staying power of the holiday classics.
About Marian Jago
Dr. Marian Jago is currently Senior Lecturer in Popular Music and Jazz Studies at the University of Edinburgh, where she also leads the Jazz & Popular Music Study Group. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Scottish Jazz Archive, and until recently was Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal Jazz Perspectives. She has published numerous articles and chapters as well as one book thus far, and is a frequent guest on BBC radio and television speaking about popular music. This is good, as it means her mum finally understands her job. Prior to academia she was a long-running student of jazz legend Lee Konitz and for more than a decade was a professional jazz saxophone player, which her mum didn’t understand much at all.
About The Stone Combo
The Stone Combo are a dynamic and engaging jazz trio based in Glasgow. The group are enthusiastic about bringing their love of jazz to the masses. Comprised of Cameron Duff on double bass, Calum Steel on guitar and Charlotte Stuart on vocals, the trio formed during their studies at the University of Glasgow and since leaving, have continued to enjoy working together.
Individually, the members are passionate musicians in their own right, and have a great wealth of performing experience. They combine this to provide captivating recitals to a variety of different audiences and settings. Together, The Stone Combo have played in iconic venues including Òran Mór, The Old Course Hotel and the Hunterian Museum.
