Under the guidance of an experienced tutor, you’ll learn essential techniques for shaping, trimming, and finishing a cohesive collection of pieces. Discover new skills like using a chuck for precise trimming and enhancing surfaces with slip inlay decoration. This course emphasises foundational skill-building, enabling you to create 4–8 unique vases, each featuring its own distinct design and finish.
Course Outline:
Week 1: Introduction to Throwing small vase forms. Learn how to collar in the necks of your cylinders and create bellies for your bottles.
Week 2: Introduction to trimming vase forms thrown in the weeks prior. Get to grips with new trimming techniques such as suction and the use of a chuck.
Week 3: Development throwing vase forms. Learn how to work on a larger scale, gain tips on extending bottle necks and introduce tools to create angles in your form whilst throwing.
Week 4: Development in trimming vase forms. Trim your works in the weeks prior and opt to include slip inlay design onto the surface of your pieces.
Week 5: Glazing. The course concludes with a session on glazing techniques, enhancing the look of your finished vases with an emphasis on masking techniques and wax resist whilst glazing.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a selection of handmade pottery to take home and the basic skills needed to continue your pottery journey.
