Exploring songs of court, country, and love, the programme weaves together works by Barbara Strozzi, Claudio Monteverdi, Nicholas Lanier, Henry Purcell, and evocative Scottish airs from Orpheus Caledonius and the court of King James VI & I.
Mhairi Lawson has sung worldwide with English National Opera, The Early Opera Company, New York City Opera and ensembles such as the Dunedin Consort, Les Arts Florissants, and the Academy of Ancient Music. Her extensive discography includes Vivaldi, Haydn, Purcell, and newly uncovered Scottish repertoire with Concerto Caledonia.
Alex McCartney is a highly regarded continuo player and chamber musician. A frequent recital partner to leading early music soloists, he also runs the recording label Veterum Musica and works on creative technology at Considerate Digital.
Programme Highlights:
Barbara Strozzi – expressive Venetian song
Claudio Monteverdi – Italian Baroque madrigals
Nicholas Lanier & Henry Purcell – English court song
Traditional Scottish Airs – from The Gentle Shepherd and Orpheus Caledonius
Lose yourself in songs of longing, love and legacy, as Lawson and McCartney bring a radiant intimacy to this evocative cross-cultural journey.
Supported by Creative Scotland, Cockaign Fund through Foundation Scotland and The Radcliffe Trust.
