Back in the frugal 60s, an expectant mum chose bus over taxi to travel to Bellshill Maternity Hospital, but was caught short en route. With clippy doubling as midwife and male passengers banished to the cig-smokey upper saloon, a baby was born on the seat behind the driver's cab.
The identity of the child has been lost in time, but the Bonkle Baby Bus - a nod to the quaintly-named Lanarkshire village it served - is one of the main attractions of Corpies, Clippies & Light at Bridgeton Garage.
Presented by Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust and the School of Art, the all-family event is a unique experience in cutting-edge video mapping, sound and sculpture. Walk over projected route maps that burst on the floor, triggered by your footsteps, take a virtual reality trip with a twist, see iconic destinations cascade down a wall while seats change pattern by video magic.
Corpies, Clippies & Light at Bridgeton Bus Garage, Broad Street, is open from 4-8pm. Visitors can pay at the door, and return rides on a classic Corpy from Cochrane Street are free (www.gvvt.org for timetable).
