Hop on board one of the beautifully restored vintage buses for a rewarding day out across seven spectacular Charles Rennie Mackintosh venues across the city, and take part in the many specially planned (and free!) activities along the way.
The Great Big Mackintosh Bus Tour is a special edition of Glasgow Museums’ popular Great Big Heritage Bus Tours, as part of this year’s citywide #Mackintosh150 celebrations. The FREE bus service, provided by the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust, will be operating a number of vintage buses along a pick up and drop off route between Kelvin Hall, Mackintosh at The Willow, Mackintosh House, The Lighthouse, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, Scotland Street School Museum, and Mackintosh Queens Cross Church.
Stop by the popular Glasgow Museums venues Kelvin Hall, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and Scotland Street School Museum, where you can enjoy a raft of family-friendly arts and crafts activities, all for free. At Kelvin Hall there will be a mini Mackintosh chair workshop, while at Scotland Street School Museum create a Mackintosh-inspired playground toy for some school-yard themed fun. At Kelvingrove, enjoy an all-ages day of stenciling, embroidery and making willow hearts, alongside metal work demonstrations by artist Bryony Knox.
The route will also give passengers the opportunity to visit other popular Mackintosh spots across the city, including Mackintosh at The Willow, Mackintosh House, The Lighthouse and Mackintosh Queens Cross Church. This is a fantastic chance to learn more about the magnificent work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with a number of tours, talks and displays to enjoy across these venues.
Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor David McDonald, said: “We are delighted to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Glasgow’s greatest cultural icon, with a tour around some of his landmark buildings which people of all ages can come together and enjoy.
“This Saturday will be a day full of free, exciting events and activities for all the family. Whether you’re a regular visitor to our museums or joining us for the first time, this weekend is the perfect opportunity to explore the different museums and Mackintosh venues; and what better way to get there than by taking a trip aboard a beautifully restored vintage bus!
“Alongside our temporary, paid exhibition Charles Rennie Mackintosh Making The Glasgow Style, which is on now until 14 August at Kelvingrove, The Great Big Mackintosh Bus Tour gives both Mackintosh aficionados and those new to his work the chance to take in and be inspired by his wonderful art and design legacy.”
Activities at the Kelvin Hall, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and Scotland Street School Museum together with those on offer at Mackintosh at The Willow, Mackintosh House, The Lighthouse and Mackintosh Queens Cross Church, and the entertaining bus trip between the venues, are all free. Activities and journeys are available from 11am to 4pm and are suitable for the whole family. There is no need to pre-book, activities and journeys are available on a drop-in, first-come first-served basis.
