Their mission is to more than just a bar; a venue that celebrates everything great about Scotland, from the incredible produce to our famous hospitality.
With a fascinating and rich history of public houses in this area of Glasgow, the site in which The Gate stands has been home to a public house since 1820. Almost 200 years later under the helm of drinks industry veteran, Andy Gemmell, it has been reimagined as a “Modern Scottish Pub” after Andy’s career working in award-winning bars and travelling the world as a whisky ambassador.
As you step inside The Gate, the interior detail has been inspired by Andy’s love of traditional pubs and his travels to some of the worlds’ best cocktail bars.
Many of its original features have been retained including fireplaces, oak beams and the original tenement close in which you enter the bar. A mix of modern and traditional features have been designed to create a visual impact for anyone entering The Gate, from the dramatic bright yellow flash covering the frontage and doorway, as you enter through the original tenement close with a runway of neon. Entering the main bar you will find a well thought out layout creating defined areas all focusing on the bar itself and its improvises Scottish spirits collection. The interior has been designed to make people feel relaxed and comfortable with dark forest green, copper touches, a reclaimed wooden floor and bar top, along with a subtle nod to its Scottish heritage including textured Tartan wallpaper and vintage whisky advertising.
You will also find homage to the local Barras Market and its traders with framed pictures from renowned Glasgow photographer Mark Leslie adorning the walls.
Drinks at The Gate have a big focus on Scottish brands with over 160 whiskies, hand selected to showcase the diverse flavour profiles of our national drink, alongside an expanding selection of 30 gins as well as craft beers, rums and liqueurs.
Cocktails have been created by The Gate bartenders with a focus on simple and delicious ingredients, with an evolving selection of six updated every month by their talented team. Their first list has drinks such as the Mana Mia; a tropical and vibrant mix of Jura single malt, apricot, Shiraz, citrus and cherry beer. As well as these six rotating cocktail serves, you can expect a section dedicated to highballs and a “fun” part consisting of exciting drinks like the Red Kola Ramos with Tanqueray gin, citrus, sugar, egg white, cream, orange blossom and Red Kola.
Food meanwhile is simple, yet all about flavour with bars snacks and delicious toasties like their “Toastie no 4” with Scottish cheddar, Italian taleggio cheese, grand Padano and grated truffle taking the humble cheese toastie to the next level.
>strong>Speaking about The Gate, owner Andy Gemmell said: “I am not trying to re-invent the wheel with The Gate, good hospitality is relatively simple - make people feel great. I have been lucky in my career to have worked in many different places from great boozers to award- winning cocktail bars. All i want to do is use my experience and give my guests a great time whenever they enter The Gate and have some great food and drink at the same time.”
After working in The Gallowgate area for five years, Andy Gemmell saw the opportunity for a new destination venue in vibrant and eclectic area of the city, to sit alongside venues such as St Lukes, 226 Gallowgate and BAaD. He continues:
“At The Gate we plan to have one of the most dedicated and motivated teams in the industry. Having the best food and drink in the world means nothing unless you have the people that can make our guests feel great every time they walk through the door.”
“I have fallen in love with the area and the people here are some of the best you will find on the planet. The Gallowgate has all the ingredients to bring something special to the city and I’m just glad that I can be part of that.”
The Gate is a welcome addition to Scotland’s thriving hospitality trade.
