Following the success of 2022 when over 21'000 people march through the streets of the city centre in the largest ever pride march to be held in Scotland, Glasgow based Scullion LAW have extended their headline sponsorship for the next 4 years ensuring that pride can continue to grow.
Glasgow's Pride was formed by members of the LGBT+ communities in 2018 following calls by the Leader of Glasgow City Council Susan Aitken that the city needed to have a pride event that was free and non-ticketed for members of the public who wished to take part. Bringing together national LGBT+ charities and locally based organisations it has quickly become a major event in Glasgow's calendar and is now established as the largest pride march in Scotland and ranked 5th in the UK behind London, Brighton, Manchester and Birmingham.
Dan Syme, Chair of the organising committee said: “Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and support from local businesses I am delighted that we saw our largest ever pride march this year hot on the heels of being the biggest UK march in 2021 as covid restrictions began to ease.
Already plans are well underway for 2023 and our team is working hard to ensure that Glasgow is proud of her LGBT+ communities as we explore additional ways of getting allies of equality involved in either taking part in the march or as spectators waving flags as we pass by.”
For the first time ever this year a pride hub was hosted at the new Strathclyde Student Union as part of a 2 day celebration of entertainment, education and of course fun which saw the cheeky girls return to Scotland after 2 decades to headline Glasgow's Pride in a free event open to all. The new union was opened by the former American President Obama as part of his visit to Glasgow last November for COP26 and is one of the largest licensed premises in the UK and boasts some of Scotland’s top sound and high-tech digital systems.
Scottish Government Minister Patrick Harvie MSP addressed the pride crowds this year as Glasgow became the 1st pride in Europe to focus on people who are bisexual and make up 54 percent of people who are LGBT+. He gave a guarantee that the Government would continue to support equality and bring forward legislation to enhance legal rights for people who are Trans with MSP's going on to pass the 1st stage of the bill last week in the Scottish Parliament with 88 voting yes and 33 no.
In 2021 Philip Bratt became the first Lord Provost of Glasgow to speak at a pride march and underlined the commitment of Glasgow City Council to supporting Glasgow's Pride Mardi Gla.
Executive Director of Glasgow's Pride Euan McLeod added: “Some people question why we need pride these days but with hate crimes rising sharply across the Glasgow City Region we need a large and very visible opportunity to say it is wrong to attack your fellow citizens because of who they choose to love.
“It is heartening that so many Glaswegians from all walks of life have come behind us to loudly say that love is love and their support has helped Glasgow's Pride grow into one of the UK's major pride marches in such a short period of times which shows what a mature, compassionate and modern European city that Glasgow has become.”
The pride movement began in 1959 at the Stonewall Inn, New York, when people who were LGBT+ rose up against continued physical attacks and intimidation from officers of the New York Police Department and is acknowledged as the start of the fight for gay rights. The movement for equality has continued to move forward in leaps and bounds, no more so than in Glasgow, where the SNP, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and the Green Party have been joined by football teams Celtic, Rangers and Partick Thistle to be seen marching hand in hand alongside members of the LGBT+ communities and putting the fight for equality before political and sporting differences.
The Stonewall Inn now displays a Glasgow Pride flag which was given by Lord Provost Eva Bolander in 2019 and granted a honour guard by the Army to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising – this was the first time the British Army had folded a pride flag and it was delivered to the British Consul General in New York before being carried down 5th avenue on behalf of every pride organisation across the UK by representatives of the Foreign and Commonwealth office, with support from the Scottish Governments USA office, at a special world pride event to mark the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.
