Nurture One has been crowned Glasgow’s brainiest business at Marie Curie’s annual black-tie quiz dinner in Glasgow, one of the charity’s biggest fundraising nights of the year.
The Glasgow Brain Game welcomed high profile guests including football manager Neil Lennon, sports pundit Gordon Duncan, celebrity chef Tony Singh MBE and radio DJ’s Garry Spence and David Farrell as well as some of the biggest names in the Glasgow business community.
The popular event was hosted by award-winning radio host and TV personality David Farrell for the first time, keeping guests entertained throughout the evening as more than 500 top tier guests from across the business world came together at the Glasgow Hilton to enjoy the famous Brain Game quiz. Sumptuous dining and elegant fundraising combined to raise an impressive £195,097 for the charity – a fundraising record in the 16 years the Glasgow Brain Game has been running.
Competition was fierce on the night, but it was the team from Nurture One – providers of therapeutic living and learning environments to support children, young people and families - who triumphed, and took to the stage to accept the coveted trophy.
A host of the city’s top companies participating included Itison, United Airlines, AG Barr, KPMG, Tigerbond, Cala Homes (West), Loch Lomond Group, McLaughlin & Harvey, Keir Construction, Livingston James and Cazenove Capital all helping raise those vital funds needed to keep Marie Curie caring and supporting terminally ill people and their loved ones.
Catherine Maclean, Special Events Manager at Marie Curie, said: “The Glasgow Brain Game is a huge event in our calendar and is such a significant night for the charity and the work we carry out in the city. We have raised a record amount this year which is absolutely fantastic. The support from Glasgow’s business world was overwhelming and the competition in the room on the night was truly electric.
“A huge congratulations to the team from Nurture One in coming out on top and being crowned Glasgow’s brainiest business.
“This annual event is very well established now in the city, and we have businesses coming out to show their support and compete for the trophy year after year which is brilliant to see. “We have also have a host of new companies involved this year including itison who provided prizes for our own take on pass the parcel – pass it on! The support we’ve had from so many local businesses has helped us grow the event to the biggest it has ever been helping us raise those vital funds.
“Marie Curie is at the heart of the communities we serve up and down the UK and here in Glasgow our teams provide overnight care in people’s homes, specialist care at our Glasgow Hospice as well as bereavement support and day clinics.
“Every colleague within Marie Curie is striving to ensure a better end of life for all, by seeing patients earlier in their terminal diagnosis allowing our clinical teams to provide the guidance and support that means they and their loved ones can plan and make the most of the time they have left together.
“Marie Curie’s Glasgow Hospice needs just over £10,000 per day to run and the Glasgow Brain Game contributes to help to raise those vital funds.
“Events like the Glasgow Brain Game ensure we can continue to provide these important services to people who need it the most so a massive thank you to everyone who came along.”
Throughout the evening, a series of quiz rounds took place, covering sport, current affairs, TV & film and music to help identify the smartest business in the room, all hosted by well-known local faces including Neil Lennon, Clyde One’s Garry Spence, and celebrity chef Tony Singh MBE.
A special round from Glasgow’s brainiest kids Rucha Chandorkar, 13, and brother Akhilesh, 18, dubbed the city’s brightest kids in the city also took place across the evening. Rucha and Akhilesh are the smartest 2% of the population and both members of MENSA - the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world.
A silent and live auction also took place, as well as a raffle sponsored by United Airlines, to win two return business class flights to New York.
