Gathering four unique contemporary artists working across Glasgow, London and Stirlingshire, the fourth issue of arts publication Windfall* exists as a sombre reflection of humankind as a species – our misjudgements and mistakes, our destruction of landscapes, and our peculiar phobia of forgetting. The publication will launch for pre-orders on Friday 29 September 2023.
Windfall* is an infrequent arts publication and collaborative platform that provides a critical and discursive space for emerging contemporary artists and their work. Through a range of interviews, experimental texts and collaborative essays, Issue 4 features the inspiring work of Alice Martin, Coral Brookes, Jessica Wetherly and Tilly P-M, considering how each artist uniquely examines ecologies and ecosystems, and how the remnants of the things we make are left behind.
Launching digitally first on Friday 29 September, followed by the physical distribution of the publication on Thursday 5 October, the Windfall* team will then host an Issue 4 Launch Event at Glasgow Zine Library on Saturday 14 October from 19:00 – 21:00. During the event, attendees will have the chance to meet some of the feature artists, browse the limited edition Riso prints designed by the artists (in collaboration with Yalla Riso) alongside the publication, and purchase copies themselves.
A special discount of 25% off the first 25 purchases will be applied on the welcome night only!
Alice Martin, one of the issue’s feature artists, said: “Working with Windfall* and, in particular, editor Kirsty has been fantastic. She not only understood the concepts behind my art but was able to articulate them in an invaluable way for readers, alongside numerous visuals with a care to layout design.”
Previously, artists that have collaborated on the publication have explained how beneficial the process has been in the development of their practice: “Windfall* gives emerging artists a platform to discuss, explore and promote their practice. It has been a valuable experience for me to understand my practice from another viewpoint and how… that [can] be translated by an editor, and engaged by a new audience.”
Elizabeth Ann Day, another of the editors of Windfall*, reflects on how the newest issue has come about: “It is difficult to maintain a project wherein both funding and time are in short supply. It has been more than two years since our last issue which is, of course, not due to lack of effort but rather a reflection of realistic working practices in the arts sector. As a team, we’re over the moon to finally be able to share this with the world, and can’t thank the featured artists enough for their patience and support.”
Windfall*’s first four issues have included artists based in London, Budapest, Copenhagen, Seoul, Krakow as well as across Scotland, cultivating an innovative network of creatives working across local, national and international contexts. Windfall* Issue 4 is grateful for the support from City of Edinburgh Council’s VACMA Bursary scheme.
